Air Liquide Acquisition of Airgas Creates World’s Largest Industrial Gas Company

As the dust settles on the November 17 announcement of the acquisition of Airgas by Air Liquide at a purchase price of $13.4 billion, including debt, pundits across the industrial and finance industries are weighing in. Air Liquide is a $20 billion French-based gas company, with 5,000 employees and 140 plants in the United States. Airgas has 17,000 employees and over 1,100 distribution locations. Sales in 2014 were $5.3 billion. Bloomberg reported that Airgas CEO Peter McCausland, who owned 6.7 million Airgas shares as of March 31, will receive $962 million in the deal. Once approved, the combined company will become the biggest industrial gas firm in the world. Here are some analyses you may have missed...

OSHA Penalties to Increase Dramatically in 2016
For the first time since 1990, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been authorized to increase its civil penalties. The provision was inserted into the bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, signed into law in November. The penalty increases are estimated at approximately 80%. The 10 most frequently cited workplace safety violations for 2015 are: fall protection, hazard communication, scaffolding, respiratory protection, lockout/tagout, powered industrial trucks, ladders, electrical-wiring methods, machine guarding, electrical-general requirements.

OSHA Proposes Electronic Data Reports
OSHA is proposing that some employers, depending upon the size of the establishment, submit injury and illness data electronically. This proposal amends the recordkeeping regulation 29 CFR Part 1904. Read more here.

Betty Q. Chadwick, C&C Oxygen Company
Betty Quintrell Chadwick, president of C&C Oxygen Company in Chattanooga, TN, passed away this summer. Described as a trail blazer, Mrs. Chadwick was the first woman to graduate from the University of Chattanooga with a degree in accounting, in 1952. She became the first female CPA in Tennessee in 1969 and went on to establish her own successful accounting firm. Along with husband Pete Chadwick and son Phil Chadwick, she started C&C Oxygen Co. in 1975. She was an active participant in the People to People Citizen Ambassador Program and traveled to China, Russia, South Africa and Japan where she collaborated with accountants in these countries to improve the accounting profession. Mrs. Chadwick was also active in many non-profit organizations. She is survived by two sons, Phil and Quin and a daughter Star, as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Derek Martin Milner, Formerly of AWISCO
Derek Martin Milner, 51, president of Milner & Martin Associates, died on November 2 while on a business trip in Las Vegas. Prior to establishing his business in 2007, he worked as vice president of sales & marketing at AWISCO in Maspeth, NY. Mr. Milner was an avid car enthusiast, a member of the Corvette Club of America, and enjoyed boating. He is survived by his partner of 32 years, Cynthia DeFeis, his mother Christa Gleason, a brother and two sisters.

GAWDA Scholarships for Children and Employees of Active GAWDA Member Companies • The GAWDA Board has approved twelve $2,000 scholarships for 2016. The goal of the GAWDA Foundation is to promote education within the Gases and Welding Industry. Scholarships will be awarded to children and employees of active GAWDA member companies. Application deadline is February 15, 2016. All applicants must meet eligibility requirements as listed on our website.
