Suppliers Operate from Position of Strength

GAWDA suppliers are projecting an average sales increase of 9.2% in 2014. That is less than 2013's 11.8% projected increase. In interviews with Welding & Gases Today, suppliers describe how they will pursue growth by uncovering new applications for existing products, finding new opportunities through acquisitions, and heeding the call of their distributor partners and the distributors' end-user customers. In Memoriam

Alan DohrnAlan Dohrn, 59, fill plant manager at Haun Specialty Gases, passed away unexpectedly on February 4 following a brief illness. Mr. Dohrn started at the company as a store manager 17 years ago and was recognized for his engineering and design expertise. He was proud of his involvement in the design and installation of the filling and production facility he managed. He also helped in the design of special gas and liquid systems for customers, and was the person salespeople and managers turned to for answers to gas-related questions that were out of the ordinary. Haun President Mark Haun says that Al loved to solve problems. "He could tackle and understand customer issues and direct them to successful outcomes. He was a practical thinker, tinkerer and problem solver. We miss him and his contributions on a daily basis." Mr. Dohrn is survived by his wife Karen, four children, a stepson and other relatives.

David WernerDavid Werner, 65, vice president of marketing at Techniweld, died in a car accident on March 4 while on vacation in Mexico. Mr. Werner spent his entire professional career in the welding industry, mostly with his family's business, National Torch Tip, where he served as president. In 2009, he joined Techniweld to help establish the company's Pittsburgh location, and served in several administrative and sales capacities. Preceded in death by his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jacob Werner and Eric Hoffman, his mother Nancy, and other relatives.

Palm Springs Regional Returns to Robust Reviews
85 people attended the Palm Springs, CA, Regional Meeting on February 12-13. It has been 6 years since the area held a regional, and by all accounts, this one was a huge success. In the presentation "Tempered Steel: Stories Behind the Scars and Wounds of War," Iraqi War veterans Jon Warren and Johnny Carabajal shared stories of survival, recovery, and adjusting to life after their return to civilian life. Attendees learned a lot about patriotism, overcoming adversity, dealing with differences, and what can be done to help returning service men and women. In "The Post-Recession Economic Recovery," Kelly Cunningham, senior fellow and economist for the National University System Institute for Policy Research, discussed what will drive the region's economic prosperity going forward. GAWDA Board Member Brad Peterson, president of Mississippi Welders Supply (Winona, MN), updated attendees on the state of the association, including GAWDA's transition to independent management.

Birmingham Blasts All Expectations
At the Vestavia Country Club on March 9-10, 125 people attended the Birmingham Regional Meeting Citing a strong balance of distributors and suppliers, one attendee called it "the most productive regional event he has attended in three years." Others remarked on the valuable networking opportunities. Three speakers were on hand to educate and motivate: Dr. Thomas DeCarlo, chair of the Department of Marketing, Industrial Distribution and Economics at the University of Alabama, talked about motivating factors for different generations of salespeople and had attendees thinking about why motivating salespeople may be more complex than increasing financial rewards to meet goals. In addition to providing an economic outlook, Morgan Stanley's Alistair Harding-Smith explained the strategies institutions use to remove emotions from investing and how individuals and companies can use similar successful strategies. Terry Hall from Linde described three industrial megatrends that Linde has invested in for future growth: emerging markets, clean energy and healthcare. He also spoke about Linde's strong position to supply helium and the impact of increased political pressures and global demand.
