GAWDA Provides Free Vital Access To CGA Electronic Safety Standards

The agreement between GAWDA and CGA continues to provide GAWDA distributor members with access to CGA’s electronic safety standards. This member benefit was announced back in 2011 in New York during the GAWDA Annual Convention by Bryan Keen, 2012 GAWDA president, and Michael Tiller, Compressed Gas Association’s president and CEO. “This is a big deal” shouted Mike Dodd, GAWDA’s DOT and Security Consultant from the back of the ballroom at that opening session of GAWDA’s Annual Meeting.

Three years later, this member benefit remains more relevant than ever. As we move ahead with Global Harmonization initiatives, access to these documents are a necessity. GAWDA distributor members save thousands of dollars a year, compared to the cost of purchasing the publications directly. In most cases these savings exceed the cost of the entire GAWDA dues amount.

Both CGA and GAWDA’s missions are to promote safety, so providing access to CGA publications to the vast distributor network helps improve safety for our employees and customers. It increases the credibility of CGA and GAWDA when we are working with regulators and legislators which is good for the industry as a whole. CGA has roughly 300 different publications addressing all aspects of the industrial and medical gases industry. A list of CGA’s publications may be viewed online at

CGA and GAWDA also co-sponsor the Safety Improvement Award for GAWDA distributor members. The award is given every year at the GAWDA annual meeting, as well as at CGA’s annual meeting, to the distributor with the greatest improvement in safety performance during the previous two years, and is based upon the total recordable case incidence rates as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

If you are a GAWDA distributor member and are not currently taking advantage of this benefit, I highly recommend that you consider participating as soon as possible. To get signed up, visit our website at

Founded in 1913, the CGA’s primary mission is to develop and promote safety standards and practices for the safe manufacture, transportation, storage, transfilling and disposal of industrial and medical gases and their containers. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has accredited CGA as a standards developing organization, and CGA is the recognized leader in the development of gas and equipment standards in North America and around the world, many of which are referenced by regulators at all levels of government.

The Gases and Welding Distributors Association (GAWDA) was founded in 1945 and has represented the distributors and manufacturers of food, medical and industrial gases and related supplies and equipment to faciliate the industry’s supply chain and to promote the value of distribution. The GAWDA mission is to promote the safe operation and economic vitality of distributors of industrial gases and related welding equipment and supplies.

With these common goals, GAWDA and CGA continue to support our members.
