Air Products Names Seifi Ghasemi Chairman, President and CEO

Effective July 1, Seifi Ghasemi will become chairman, president and chief executive officer of Air Products. Ghasemi succeeds John E. McGlade, who has retired after 40 years at Praxair. Appointed to the Board of Air Products in September 2013, Ghasemi is an accomplished global business leader who brings an ideal combination of financial and operational acumen, significant experience overseeing an international portfolio, and expertise in the industrial gases, specialty chemicals and advanced materials industries. Since 2001, he has served as chairman and CEO of Rockwood Holdings, a global leader in inorganic specialty chemicals and advanced materials. Prior to joining Rockwood, he held a number of leadership positions at global industrial companies, including chairman and CEO of GKN Sinter Metals, and in a variety of senior roles with The BOC Group. “I am excited by the many significant growth opportunities that lie ahead, driven by energy, environmental and emerging markets,” says Ghasemi. “The opportunity to advance this great company and improve returns is a tremendous privilege. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to take Air Products forward.”

CWS Moves Olympia Branch to New Location

Central Welding Supply moved its Pacific Welding Supplies location in Olympia, WA, to 8001 Martin Way E in Olympia. “The new store’s retail showroom is four times the size of the previous one, and the site provides for a much larger yard, wide open parking areas, a convenient cylinder exchange dock, a huge warehouse area, welder demo and repair station, and additional offices and space for expansion and additional future staff,” says CEO Dale Wilton. “With 7,000 sq ft of building space on 1.08 acres of land, the new site will allow us to continue to expand and grow in the Olympia and greater Thurston County markets.” The new Olympia location is the third in a series of 2014 construction projects for Central Welding Supply, which opened locations in Kelso and Vancouver, WA, earlier this year.

Airgas Acquires Technical Alloy & Industrial Gas

Airgas, Inc. acquired the assets and operations of Team Welding, Ltd. dba Technical Alloy & Industrial Gas. Based in Houston, TX, Technical Alloy generated approximately $20 million in sales in calendar year 2013. “The addition of Technical Alloy and its 38 associates to our Gulf Coast region will help to further increase our density and strengthen our competitive position in the greater Houston area,” says Les Graff, Airgas senior vice president-corporate development.

O.E. Meyer Co. Named Top Distributor

O.E. Meyer Co. was named Hypertherm’s Top North American Independent Distributor. O.E. Meyer Co. was selected through a ballot process involving Hypertherm’s management team, North American sales team, and customer and technical service teams. The award, named after Hypertherm Chairman and CEO Dick Couch, includes a $500 donation to a nonprofit organization of the winner’s choice. O.E. Meyer Co. selected the Boys and Girls Club of Erie County to receive the charitable donation.

Praxair Opens Fill Plant in North Dakota

Praxair, Inc. started up a new packaged gas fill plant in Bismarck, ND, significantly increasing its cylinder gases capacity in the Bakken shale oil formation region. This automated facility has been designed to quickly and efficiently fill packaged gases, from single cylinders and packs to liquid vessels and tube trailers. According to Praxair General Manager Robert Crew, the plant has reduced turnaround times and nearly doubles previous fill capacities. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, estimated crude oil production in the Bakken region of North Dakota and Montana shows total wellhead output of over one million barrels of oil per day, which would rank North Dakota second only to Texas in oil production.

Vern Lewis Welding Supply Moves Phoenix Location

Vern Lewis Welding Supply relocated its central Phoenix location to a larger facility at 2105 W. McDowell Rd. in Phoenix, just a few miles north of its previous location. As inventory expanded, the company found a need for a larger sales floor. The new 6,000 sq. ft. retail facility features an additional two stations for counter sales, altane and propane fill station, and large covered cylinder storage to support the company’s growing customer base. This is the second relocation for the company this year. The Prescott Valley location moved from a shared commercial building to a larger, stand-alone facility which also has more property for cylinder storage and an increased warehouse footprint.

Congressman Visits Southern Gas & Supply

Gas & Supply, welcomed a visit from Congressman Bradley Byrne (R-AL) to its Theodore, AL, store. Congressman Byrne, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, met with Southern Gas & Supply employees to discuss the unique skills they contribute to the industrial base that supplies parts and products critical to the U.S. Navy’s shipbuilding programs. “I was pleased to have the opportunity to be able to meet the hardworking employees at Gas & Supply and to develop a greater understanding of the significant contributions they make to our local economy and our national defense. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the importance of facilities like this one to a healthy industrial base to guarantee that our soldiers deployed have the equipment they need to fully accomplish their mission,” says Congressman Byrne. The Sales and Support staff at the Theodore Branch have developed a partnership with several US Navy contractors that directly affect jobs in the congressman’s district. “Hosting Congressman Byrne at our Theodore facility gave us the opportunity to showcase the work we do at Gas & Supply and highlight how our business depends on a fully funded U.S. Navy shipbuilding program. We look forward to Congressman Byrne’s continued leadership on funding U.S. Navy projects at a level that will maintain our nation’s strength,” says Tom Burch, vice president of sales.

ALM Sponsors Endurance Racing Series

The ALM Positioners Autobahn Endurance Racing Series debuted June 1, 2014, with a field full of beautiful cars divided into 4 classes for the 3.5 hour Enduro on the Autobahn Country Club South Course in Joilet, IL, considered to be the nation’s premier Motorsports Country Club. H&H Racing ran a flawless race and took home the GT3 class and overall win. The GT1 victors were the GSD Racing team, and the ALM Scroggin Motorsport won the Spec Miata battle. The next round of the ALM Positioners Autobahn Endurance Racing Series is set for August1, this time on the Autobahn Full Course.
