Coastal Honors Local Firefighters

To honor local firefighters, Coastal Welding Supply in Beaumont, TX, provided a catered barbecue lunch for a group of firefighters who responded to a minor fire caused by a contractor at a service shop the previous week. According to Coastal President J.C. Chuck Mazoch, “Fire damage was kept to a minimum due to their prompt response and thorough post-fire evaluation. It’s their job, but it is also important to appreciate our firefighters and thank them for a job well done.”

Gamon Joins Tier 5 Labs

Ed Gamon, formerly the gas division manager of Encompass Gas Group, has joined Tier 5 Labs. “The Team at Tier 5 is excited to have Ed join us as he brings deep production experience and expertise,” says Ed Pyle, vice president of Tier 5 Labs, LLC.

Michael S. FinkFink Returns to Acme

Acme Cryogenics is pleased to announce the recent appointment of former Acme employee Michael S. Fink as director of sales and business development based in Allentown, PA. He brings back to Acme over 20 years of industrial gas experience. Prior to his previous position as president of Airgas Medical Services, Fink was owner/president of Medical Gas Management until 2008 when it was acquired by Airgas. He has also held many positions at Acme from 1993 until 2006, including president/CEO.

Airgas Hires President for Merchant Gases

Thomas R. Stringer was named president of Airgas Merchant Gases. Stringer joins Airgas from Alstom Power, a manufacturer of electrical power generation and transmission systems and connective environmental solutions, where he spent the past 6 years in leadership roles. Prior to that, Stringer spent a combined 22 years with The BOC Group and The Linde Group, where he held leadership roles in engineering, product development and business development in both the U.S. and the U.K. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of New Jersey and a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He will report to Thomas S. Thoman, Airgas division president-gases production.

New Use for Welding Equipment

Regardless of the indicators that show welder salaries are high, television station KIII TV3 in Corpus Christi, TX, reported a story last week about a man allegedly breaking into dispensing machines at a car wash just after midnight on a Sunday. The suspect drove up in a Ford F-450 truck equipped with welding equipment and pulled up next to the towel and ArmorAll dispensing machines. The suspect then used a torch to cut the locks off of the machinery, but was startled by something and put his tools away, fleeing the scene in his truck. It’s not clear whether the suspect wanted cash, towels or to test his welding skills. He remains at large.

Vance Earns Certification

Jonda L. Vance, senior associate consultant for The Edwards Group, has completed the requirements to be named an ASQ-Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence, or ASQ CMQ/OE. This designation indicates a proficiency in and a comprehension of quality management principles and practices.

NASA Develops Composite Cryogenic Fuel Tank for Deep Space Missions

NASA and Boeing have developed an 18-ft. diameter cryotank that will be 30% lighter over metal tanks currently available. One of the largest composite tanks ever manufactured, the composite cryotank is set to undergo a series of tests at extreme pressures and temperatures similar to those experienced during spaceflight.
