Former Air Products Researcher Honored
Lehigh Valley, PA — In his 24-year chemical engineering career at Air Products, Rakesh Agrawal was awarded the greatest number of technology patents in the company’s 71-year history. He added another award to his collection when he was presented the United States Government’s highest honor for technology, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Agrawal received the award in recognition of his extraordinary record of innovations improving energy efficiency and reducing the cost of gas liquefaction and separation. Overall, he holds 116 US and nearly 500 foreign patents. After Air Products, Agrawal joined Purdue University, where he is the Winthrop E. Stone Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering.

Matheson Supports Balloon Race
Basking Ridge, NJ — Matheson sponsored the America’s Challenge Gas Balloon Race at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta held in Albuquerque, NM, supplying gas for 4 helium balloons and 4 hydrogen balloons. The America’s Challenge Gas Balloon Race is a cross-country duration and distance race, and this year, the event featured both hydrogen and helium balloons. The winning team flew for 71 hours, 32 minutes and traveled a distance of 974 miles, landing 65 miles from Minot, ND. Gas balloons have been a part of the Balloon Fiesta since 1981.

Ohio Linde Plant Certified
Murray Hill, NJ — Linde received certification of its Lima, OH, carbon dioxide plant under the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care program. The program is aimed at helping companies improve performance in areas such as safety, health, environment and security. Linde’s Lima plant produces CO2 for use in food, beverage, metals and chemical manufacturing. It purifies and liquefies some 850 tons a day of CO2 captured from ethanol production that would otherwise be vented into the atmosphere.
