Meet A GAWDA Edger: Troy Hill

When I left the U.S. Navy, I had no idea what to do next. I figured college was the only option, but I needed a job that would last nine months, until I started the semester. That was 19 years ago. I’ve been here at WELSCO ever since.

My first job was delivering to customers, despite the fact that I had never driven anything diesel. After proving my ability behind the wheel, I did route sales, despite the fact that I’d never sold anything. But I was a fast study: At every location I’ve been, sales have doubled or tripled. It seems I’ve been in the right spot all the time. But I’ve also worked hard to learn the essence of sales: Be ready to work and take care of your customers; service your customer to keep them coming back.

Early on, when driving the route truck, I went 20 miles out of my way to a customer in desperate need of a repair on a welder. They were down and needed to be working. I walked up to it, looked at it, said, “Here’s the problem,” and fixed it. It was a simple fix, but the customer kept thanking me for getting the company back on line. Simple things like that just make the day.
